Help, my mechanic is leaving! How do I find a new one?

The departure of a mechanic or an employee in your organization often causes many problems, especially at Small and Medium Enterprises (SME). Not only does a lot of knowledge go outside - perhaps even to the competitor - but it can also put the entire business under pressure. In the current job market it is not easy to replace mechanics. Unemployment is low and the number of jobs is growing enormously. As a result, vacancies are often left open for a long time.

As an SME, how do you ensure that you are able to attract the correct new employees? These tips will help you with doing so!

1. Use your network

Using the network of your (former)employees, suppliers and customers is by far number one. This is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to recruit suitable staff. It saves costs, but more importantly, the chance that you will find someone who fits in the company culture is also bigger. You could reward an employee who introduces a new colleague with a small gift. This will motivate them to help you find new employees.

2. Company website and social media

Create a separate page on your website for vacancies and information about working in your organization. Do not use too much text for this, but mostly photos and/or videos. Do not forget to publish and update recent vacancies. Place this content also on social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

3. Make sure you know who you are looking for

Due to the large number of vacancies, it is important that your vacancy stands out immediately. You do not achieve this by using standard text and terms. Make sure you know who you are looking for and create a vacancy that is attractive and recognizable for that target group. Also explain why he or she should choose your company.

4. Publish vacancies online

Once you know who you are looking for, the next tip is to find out where you can reach them. Then consider how you can be visible in those online places with your vacancy. Make sure they cannot ignore your vacancy. There are several free job sites on the internet such as Indeed, Glassdoor and Jora UK. Another good option is to post the vacancy on a website of a forum or industry association. With this you reach a large target group!

5. Publish vacancies offline

Besides online, the ‘old-fashioned’ advertisement is also still a widely used recruitment channel. Advertising in professional magazines or local newspapers - which remains on the canteen tables - can be very effective!

6. Collaborate with schools

The employee of the future is still in school at this moment. That is why it is important that you invest in a good relationship with schools and tutors. Make sure you offer internships or traineeships, so that you can leave a good impression of the company before the students find a job.
